Epic Change: Tweetsgiving
Tweetsgiving was a 48-hour Twitter event dedicated to raising money for a school in Tanzania through the non-profit Epic Change. The
goal was to raise a total of $10,000 over two days, ending at 12pm on
Thanksgiving Day (2008), asking people to donate while telling the
world what they're thankful for. Epic
Change promised that every $10 donation would purchase a brick with an
inscription of the donor's tweet, all of which would be built into the
wall of a classroom in the school to commemorate the project. Additionally,
anyone who donated $100 or more received a prominent listing on the
Tweetsgiving microsite as "Top Turkeys," with visitors encouraged to
follow these people on Twitter. A
number of Twitter "influencers" (Twitter users with anywhere from a few
hundred followers to 10,000+ followers) kicked off the event at 12pm
that Tuesday, using the hashtag "#Tweetsgiving" and posting the link to
the Tweetsgiving microsite http://tweetsgiving.org to put "#Tweetsgiving" in Twitter's top 10 trending topics throughout the 48-hour period.
